the last sin
  pale ashen sky
a bleary eye
clouds of recurring screams...
i am a zoo
  an octopus leviathan
tentacles into an ocean
of unformed emotions...
syphilis and love
  syphilitic pall
stifles the clear blue
i contort...

shell and pearl
  amidst highs and lows
in life's ocean flows
a shell peony-mouthed...

i am an unmarried mother

  fed on stings
of barbed milk morality
my child-plankton...

the lovers
  cell upon cell
bridge of their union
hung on the pillars...
rebirth
  ogre of age
and time cavil
at a warm picture...
the young today
  innocence thaws
at the altar
of ambition...

monitor

a gentle cracking of the egg
and we see him crawling out
using an egg tooth to break through
the leathery shell his first step
into the ruthless Darwinian world
a tropical creature his kin is not
his protector each one for himself
and God against all a la Herzog
the first lesson he needs to learn
is to survive just hang on to life
not many of his siblings
usually deposited in holes in riverbanks
or in trees’ hollow along water courses
and sometimes even in termite nests
will last their first year
such is the travesty of existence

surviving and managing hunger
major preoccupations in his wonder years
he searches actively for food
and learns to relish his prey in one piece
swallowing giant land snails grasshoppers beetles
whip scorpions crocodiles and birds
eggs crabs fish lizards snakes
nestling birds shrews and squirrels
all grist to his mill

his claws are long and sharp
jaws strong
his tail produces a stinging lash
a sort of defence mechanism
he also intimidates predators
by inflating his throat hissing loudly
turning sideways
and compressing his broken
cross band ringed body
managing to outsmart his dominant kin
and other creatures
he grows into a debonair six feet
and now we see him fighting
for a dead shark’s entrails
and for the full-bodied female
holding his head erect on his slender neck
it's more than attention really
attracted by the female's maddening scent
he wants to mate
recreate and procreate

typical man
so what if he is a monitor lizard
